The Film

We will be filming a documentary during this journey:  “The Healing Power of the Ocean.”  It’s no secret that sailing the ocean saved Captain Brian’s life.  He began to heal through the support of his marina community and connecting to the ocean’s raw power.  Brian just passed the two year mark in his sobriety and finds himself enveloped in a new world, one in which he feels joy for the first time.  This new feeling follows 25 years of severe depression, alcoholism and addiction compounded more recently by the trauma of twice losing his home, his possessions and nearly his life.

Some of these struggles were highlighted in ADRIFT, an award winning short documentary Brian directed in 2017 based on his life.  He speaks very openly about his struggles and encourages others to do so as well.  Bringing these struggles to the forefront is imperative.   Internalizing them only leads to further pain and anguish.  It takes action, commitment and support to heal.  Brian committed to change when he saw how drinking nearly destroyed his one joy in life, that of sailing, and began rehab.   He found support from his community, family, friendship and a higher power, all related to sailing the ocean. From the camaraderie and competition of racing to celebrating the holidays with his marina family, there simply is no other life for him to live.

As we embark on this journey, we intend to further develop this community while continuing to tell Brian’s story of recovery and hope.

Marina Family

Rarely in life are you fortunate enough to be in the right place and right time to live somewhere surrounded by such truly authentic people.  The love from them means absolutely everything to me.  Leaving this place and these people is going to be one of the most difficult things I have ever done.

The Parentals

This trip would not be possible without the love and support from my amazing parents.   I have said it a hundred times, I am the luckiest man in the world to have them in my life.  I know I will make them proud on this journey.   I called them 3 months ago and said "How cool would it be to have someone that circumnavigated in the family."   And here we are! it's actually is a reality!

Captain B

Brian’s love of the sea began as a young boy growing up on Cape Cod sailing a Cape Dory 10.  When he moved to Marina del Rey several years ago, he began taking lessons and sailing again as crew on a J105 race team.  Between the lessons, hundreds of races and community gained his interest grew vastly.  Thus he bought a 1979 27’ Catalina of his own. Shortly there after tired of living on the mainland, he bought a 44’ Hunter Deck Salon to live aboard.  He sailed daily to improve his skills and to experience the freedom of the seas.  In 2020, he sailed single-handed up the west coast to Seattle and back, a trip of nearly 5,000 miles.  In 2021, he spent five months sailing, again single-handed, along the coast of Mexico exploring Ensenada, La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, La Cruz, and Puerto Vallarta.   Another 5000 miles.  Throughout the trip, he met adventurous cruisers like himself who shared his love of the sea.  Now, it’s all about challenging himself and his crew with a once in a lifetime adventure; to explore new regions of the world, to learn about different cultures and to continue his journey as a sailor and a boat captain.

Angela - 2022

Angela is a geographer and environmental scientist whose passion for exploring the world has been ongoing over the past 12 years. For long she has been curious whether long term sailing could be a thing for her. Looking for new and unconventional ways to make a difference to people and the environment, she believes that many answers can be found through experiencing life at sea.

Hans - 2022

Hans was born and raised in Reykjavik, Iceland. He recently completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering and is currently building up his computer vision startup with the prospect of remote work in mind.

Enjoyment of travellng to warmer places is integrated into all Icelanders, so it did not take much effort for Angela to convince him to join her to explore the life on a sailboat.

Timmy - 2022

Tim has spent most of his years in sunny Santa Barbara where he’s been sailing the Channel Islands with his crusty crew of ocean-loving friends. Although there’s been no shortage of wild journeys, he recently quit his job as a software engineer for an environmentally-focused startup and he’s been hoping for a grander adventure. This circumnavigation seems the perfect blend of all his passions: good people, sailing, wildlife, problem solving, sustainability, surfing, diving, and exploring.
